Aaron Nola is the first to the bump on this NRFI play, and that’s probably why we’re getting underdog odds on the “no” side. However, he actually entered the break on a nice mini-run. His last two starts saw him throw 12.0 innings and allow just five runs (a 3.75 ERA). Not only that, but a lot of his strikeout stuff returned. He fanned 15 in that 12.0 inning stretch including eight strikeouts his last time out. It will help him here that the Mets limped into the break with just four runs in a three-game set with Boston. As a result, I trust Nola to get us out of the first unscathed.
The Phillies aren’t exactly white-hot with the bats either. In their last four games, they’ve scored just 12 runs – which comes out to 3.00 per game. Additionally, a lot of their best hitters got just one day off having played in this week’s festivities. Their offensive woes won’t be aided by Christian Scott, who toes the rubber Thursday night. He’s rocking a 3.17 ERA on the year with 65 strikeouts in just 54.0 innings. He’s been even better over his last couple months. In his last seven starts, he’s posted a 2.62 ERA, which includes a clean first inning against the Phillies in late-June.
