Friday’s contest contains the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object. Spain has yet to be scored on during this tournament. They’ve strolled through qualifying and the first two stages of the knockout stage with a 9-0 scoring total. Belgium has not been nearly as tidy on defense, but they have managed to rack up a ton of goals. Over their last three games alone, they have put up 12 goals (or 4.0) per game. So what way does the ball bounce in this one – high scoring affair or another Spanish shutout?
As good as this Spanish defense is, I can’t imagine them holding off all the weapons that Belgium possesses for a full 90 minutes. Charles De Ketelaere is starting to look like a bona fide star in his first World Cup and he did it without Kevin de Bruyne setting the table last game. Romelu Lukaku has also been sensational as a late game sub with a nose for the goal. Now, that doesn’t mean that I think Belgium is going to walk through Spain without any counter. Spain’s offense has been more than formidable as well.
Expect the game to go back-and-forth with extra time likely.
