If you’re looking to make a play on the matinee for the final day of the round of 16, don’t overthink it. Argentina has looked like the class of the tournament and they appear to have a likely date with France in the finals. To make matters even better for them, they drew an easy corner of the bracket that includes games with Cape Verde, Egypt and then the winner of Colombia and Switzerland.
While some might be deterred by what happened with Cape Verde, consider the results we saw from the small island throughout the tournament. They drew Spain and Uruguay, and showed some surprising scoring abilities.
And it’s the attack of Egypt that I think won’t hold up. Despite having the likes of Mohamed Salah up front, they’ve been held to one goal in three of their four contests. If they can’t put in multiple goals here, it’s unlikely that this will even be close.
Best Bets for Argentina/Egypt: Argentina -1.5 (+100) and Under 2.5 Goals (+105)
Switzerland vs. Colombia
Kickoff – 4:00 pm EST
BC Place – Vancouver, Canada
Broadcast – FOX
The final round of 16 games is likely to be a lot closer. You’ve got a team in Switzerland who has been excellent at putting up numbers on the board, and a squad in Colombia that has locked down plenty of offenses. The level of competition has been roughly similar for the two, so it really comes down to who we think will be able to enforce their will.
My gut tells me to trust the attack of Switzerland. These knockout games have favored the team that can push the action. Switzerland was certainly that in their 2-0 win over Algeria. Their expected goals show that they were maybe even unlucky in that game to just get two goals. While Colombia might lead this game in possession, I do expect Switzerland to make the better of their chances.
Best Bets for Switzerland/Colombia: Switzerland to Advance (+125) and Over 2.5 Goals (-115)
