Portugal vs. Spain
Kickoff – 3:00 pm EST
AT&T Stadium – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – FOX
Spain’s future odds took a hit after an opening game draw with Cape Verde. While at the time, that looked like an ugly result, in retrospect it looks respectable. You also have to respect the way that they responded to being shut out. They exploded on offense over the next three games – scoring eight goals total. Although the youngster Lamine Yamal has been the talk of the tournament, the play up front from Mikel Oyarzabal has arguably been even more impressive.
Portugal also opened the World Cup with a disappointing draw. They ended with a 1-1 result against Congo to open things up. That 1-1 draw was indicative of perhaps their greatest flaw. After outpossessing them for the bulk of the first half, they saw a few minutes of sustained pressure and cracked. You could see a similar issue in the knockout stage against Croatia. They’re clearly a team who settles into being the aggressor and stumble when someone challenges that.
Against this aggressive Spanish front, you have to imagine Portugal will be on their heels more than they’re used to. When that happens, expect Spain to capitalize.
Best Bets for Spain/Portugal: Spain ML (-110) and Over 3.5 Goals (+160)
United States vs. Belgium
Kickoff – 8:00 pm EST
Lumen Field – Seattle, Washington
Broadcast – FOX
This may wind up being the most talked about game of the entire tournament. Not necessarily because of what was going on on the pitch, but because of what went on beforehand. After taking a VAR red card in the round of 32, it appeared we would not have Folarin Balogun. However, the FIFA committee reviewed it and suspended the one-game ban.
That, of course, adds a huge element to this one. Balogun has been the best attacker for the United States – and it hasn’t been particularly close. While Weston McKennie and Christain Pulisic have been great at creating chances, Balogun has had a nose for goal unlike any American in recent history.
It’s that potent offense that I think wins them the game here. Belgium has struggled with any offense that shows signs of life. Senegal came out and took it right to them – with Belgium needing a 125th minute penalty to pull it off. Senegal has a less dangerous front line and as a result, I expect Belgium to be in a hole that is difficult to overcome.
Best Bets for United States/Belgium: United States to Advance (-130) and Under 3.5 Goals (-170)
