MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 30
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Phillies will be first to the plate on Tuesday and they haven’t exactly been tearing the cover off the ball lately. Over their last four games, they’ve managed just 4.00 runs per game, which includes a pair of games with two or less. That’s not going to get easier with Bubba Chandler on the bump. He’s been dealing as of late with four straight starts of two runs or less. That comes out to a 2.82 ERA in that span with only one homer allowed. That ability to keep other teams in the park will do him, and our NRFI, well here.
Closing out the NRFI will be Cristopher Sanchez. Sanchez has a 2.13 ERA on the year and has already struck out 127 batters. Had Jacob Misiorowski never been born, Sanchez would be the far and away favorite to win the NL Cy Young this year. At this point, I would take him in an NRFI situation against an All-Star team. While the Pirates are an above average team when it comes to scoring runs, they aren’t going to strike early on him.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 30: No (-110)
Cincinnati Reds vs. Milwaukee Brewers
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI
Broadcast – MLB TV
Cincinnati is first up in this one and they’re an offense I look to fade often. They rank 19th in the majors with 4.25 runs per game and have scored just seven in their last two. Not only that, but they are typically bad in the first inning. They rank in the bottom third of the league in first inning runs. They have to face Brandon Sproat, who isn’t the typical pitcher we chase for NRFI action. However, he has shown signs of brilliance recently. He threw 6.0 scoreless against the Reds in his last start with 10 strikeouts and only one hit. I don’t expect the exact same performance here, but it would be a stark difference to see a first inning run scored.
In the bottom of the first, we have a much better hitting team on our plate. Although that can be scary, I’m buying the spike on Rhett Lowder. While his season stats are still a bit high, he’s been excellent in the last month or so. He’s posted a 3.66 ERA in the month of June and has fanned 21 in 19.2 innings. Most importantly for our purposes, he’s kept a clean first inning in four of his last five starts.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 30: No (-105)
