Daily World Cup Best Bets – June 30th
Ivory Coast vs. Norway
Kickoff – 1:00 pm EST
AT&T Stadium – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – FOX
As we saw in the last couple of games on Tuesday, teams that are clearly outmatched in terms of firepower are parking the bus early and often. There is no doubt in this one that the Ivory Coast will eventually fall into that mode. The only question is, how early will they decide to do so? Personally, I believe that choice will come early after a decent attempt or two by the oversized Norwegian attackers.
While that plan worked for Paraguay and nearly worked for the Netherlands, I don’t expect Ivory Coast to be able to hold up under that pressure. Sander Berge and Erling Haaland give Norway such an aerial presence, and the rest of the squad has just had a nose for the goal. As a result, Norway has yet to play in a game that didn’t have at least five goals this World Cup. That style of game doesn’t bode well for Ivory Coast.
Best Bets for Ivory Coast/Norway: Norway ML (+115) and Over 3.5 Goals (+220)
France vs. Sweden
Kickoff – 5:00 pm EST
MetLife Stadium – East Rutherford, New Jersey
Broadcast – FOX
While the trend is to take unders and expect games to go into extra-time, this is another one that I just don’t think keeps the trend rolling. Sweden showed some real issues on the defensive side during the group stage. The Netherlands blew them up for five goals during matchday two with two of those goals coming in the first 20 minutes. They settled in a bit against Japan, but that was largely due to Japan just needing a draw to assure second place.
France, on the other hand, may be the most high-powered offense in the whole tournament. They had double-digit group goals capped by a hat trick from Ousmane Dembélé against a tough Norway team. France is likely to strike early in this one, which will force Sweden to open up. If they do, this should get out of control.
Best Bets for France/Sweden: France -1.5 (-125) and Over 3.5 (+115)
Mexico vs. Educador
Kickoff – 9:00 pm EST
Estadio Banorte – Mexico City, Mexico
Broadcast – FOX
If there is a game that will follow the trend of needing extra-time on Tuesday, it’s this one. Mexico kept all of their opponents scoreless in the group. Now, some of that is due to having a fairly weak group, but they also looked sound in terms of their play out of the back.
Ecuador is no slouch on defense either. After conceding a goal to Leroy Sane in the second minute of the game, they fended off the attacks from Germany for the remaining 88 minutes and pulled off the upset.
When you add in the environment – a stadium that sits over 7,000 feet above sea level – the likelihood of holding back late should increase. I’m not sure which team will eventually take the back seat, but it could be a little of both.
Best Bets for Mexico/Ecuador: Draw (+190) and Under 2.5 Goals (-170)
