Daily World Cup Best Bets – July 1st

England vs. Congo DR

Kickoff – 12:00 pm EST
Mercedes-Benz Stadium – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – FOX

The obvious play here is for England to advance, but with the line being as wide as it is, you’re going to have to get a little more creative. I think this game has a good chance of playing out similar to France and Sweden on Tuesday. Congo has been a team that has clearly excelled at parking the bus and looking for points that way. They hung back for large portions of their draw with Portugal and tried to play for a scoreless draw with Colombia until they scored late. The only game we saw any real pressure on opposing teams was when they went for it early against Uzbekistan and conceded just 10 minutes in.

If they hang back early against this English squad, they are likely to succumb to the pressure. The tandem of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane has just been too much for most teams. When they eventually get on the board in this one, Congo’s efforts to fight back will just dig them deeper holes. This should be a rout by the time the final whistle blows.

Best Bets for England/Congo DR:  England -1.5 (-115) and Over 2.5 Goals (+100)

Belgium vs. Senegal

Kickoff – 4:00 pm EST
Lumen Field –  Seattle, Washington
Broadcast – FS1

If you had shown me the lines in this game before the tournament started, I would think that we’re getting some of the best value on the Belgium side that we could get. However, now that we’ve seen the group stage play out, I’m not so sure Belgium even advances here.

Senegal was placed in the one real ‘group of death’ that this expanded World Cup had. Despite needing to play two teams that are already in the round of 16, they still managed to find themselves here. That’s because when they need to, they can really turn up the pressure and go get a goal. Crystal Palace’s Ismaïla Sarr has had a nose for the goal and Everton’s Idrissa Gueye has looked good setting things up. They play with a level of physicality that could be a problem not just for the Belgians, but whoever they see in the next round.

Belgium showed the opposite in this tournament. Even against teams that they were supposed to crush, they had trouble breaking through. I’m not counting a beatdown of New Zealand as an indicator of anything. Look for Senegal to pressure early and often and Belgium to have no response.

Best Bets for Belgium/Senegal:  Senegal to Advance (+135) and Under 1.5 Goals (+245)

United States vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina

Kickoff – 8:00 pm EST
Levi’s Stadium – Santa Clara, California
Broadcast – FOX

Could we be playing a little bit of homer action here? Sure. However, it’s hard to imagine a team that has been as uninspiring as Bosnia-Herzegovina has been coming in and knocking off the United States on home soil. Bosnia-Herzegovina looked confused on the attack at times and conceded a goal to Qatar, who looked like they didn’t belong in this tournament.

Now the United States should have a rested Christian Pulisic and should get a full game out of their usual complement of starters. With the Turkey game behind them, look for them to blow up the scoreboard in this one.

Best Bets for United States/Bosnia-Herzegovina:  United States -1.5 (+110) and Over 2.5 Goals (-155)
