MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 29
Texas Rangers vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 7:00 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – ESPN
One of my favorite starters this season is first to the bump. Parker Messick gets another start to add to his AL Rookie of the Year candidacy. He currently sits in the top ten of ERA with a 2.67 mark and has already cracked 100 strikeouts on the season. He’s looked extra sharp lately as well, allowing two or less runs in back-to-back starts with 19 strikeouts in 13.1 innings. That’s bad news for a Rangers team that ranks in the bottom third of the league in runs scored and have struck out 33 times in their last three games.
One of the few teams that are worse than the Rangers in terms of run scoring is the Guardians. Their 3.94 runs per game makes them one of two teams in the majors who come in under 4.00 runs per game. They’ll face an opener on Monday in Tyler Alexander. While I usually don’t like backing an opener, Alexander is sporting a 2.62 ERA on the year and hasn’t allowed an earned run in six straight appearances. In the month of June, his ERA is a miniscule 0.96. As a result, we can make an opener exception for him.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 29: No (-125)
Minnesota Twins vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
Peter Lambert is first to the hill in this one and he’s been lights out lately. Over his last five starts, he hasn’t gone above two earned runs in any start. In that span (28.1 innings), he’s put up a 2.54 ERA and struck out 23 batters. The Twins are a slightly above average offense, but they have struggled a bit with run scoring lately. They’ve put up three or less in four of their last six games. Lambert should help to expand that stretch for them here.
Closing out this NRFI play is Zebby Matthews. Some might be hesitant to get in with him being that he has a 4.56 ERA on the year. However, that really doesn’t tell the story of how good he could be. In eight starts this year, he’s managed to hold six of his opponents to three runs or fewer. However, the other two starts were pure disasters. If you take those out of his yearly stats, he’d have just a 2.54 ERA. Between that and his ability to rack up the strikeouts, I like his chances to get through the top of this Houston order.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 29: No (+105)
