MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 28
Colorado Rockies vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV
Minnesota is an above average team when it comes to run production and they’re also solid in the first inning. So why get in on an NRFI play for them? The answer is that there is a wildly underrated pitcher on the bump for this one. Sure, the ERA for Ryan Feltner is nothing to write home about. However, it is largely inflated by the couple of bad starts he’s had this year. Meanwhile, if you look at his last seven times on the bump, he’s allowed more than two earned runs just once. Even with the one blip being a six-run start against the Cubs, he’s posting a 3.89 ERA in that span. Those stats are even more impressive when you consider six of them were at Coors Field.
On the other side of things, we are fading the hitting of the Rockies. Colorado, despite playing on the moon, is 11th in the league in runs scored and 17th in home runs. Now they’ll play in a much more neutral park in Target Field – which actually ranks below average in terms of allowing home runs. That’s good news for Connor Prielipp, who gets the ball on Sunday. He’s faltered quite a bit from his hot start, but a lot of it comes the second time through the order. Despite his recent struggles, he’s allowed a first inning run in just one of his last five games. With this Rockies team hitting like they are, he should breeze through them.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 28: No (-115)
Atlanta Braves vs. San Francisco Giants
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Speaking of fades, we are all in on fading this Braves offense right now. After starting as hot as a team could start, they’ve run out of gas without Ronald Acuna at the top of the order. With him out, they’ve turned into a team that doesn’t seem to have much of an offensive identity. In total, they’ve scored just 11 runs in their last five games (2.2 per game) and six of them came in an extra inning affair in San Diego. In the other four games, they’ve managed just five runs. Robbie Ray gets the assignment for this one, and he saw Atlanta at the beginning of this skid. Back on the 16th of June, he threw 6.1 scoreless in Atlanta. He’ll get a chance to replicate that at home.
On the other side, the Giants have not been much of a force with the bats either. They’re in the bottom third of the league in runs scored and rank 27th when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They, too, haven’t been on a hot streak – scoring just 17 runs over the last five games (3.4 per game). Now they’ll have the ill-fate of a Sunday showdown with Chris Sale. The 2024 Cy Young winner is in top form again this year, posting a 2.14 ERA with 99 strikeouts in 84.0 innings. Look for him to fan his way through the bottom of the first.
