Daily World Cup Best Bets – June 28th
South Africa vs. Canada
Kickoff – 3:00 pm EST
SoFi Stadium – Inglewood, California
Broadcast – FOX
A quick glance at the stats for this one would make you lean to the host Canadians. Although they’ll be on the road in this one, they’re averaging over two goals a game more than the South Africans. The expected goals have an even larger split and they have a possession advantage of over 16%. However, those differences are far less when you take the strength of schedule into consideration. Canada’s six-goal performance against Qatar sways those statistics heavily – grabbing nearly 80% possession in that one. Their true talent is a lot further from what they looked like in that game and a lot closer to the team who was scrambling for any control in the first 60 minutes against Switzerland.
A similar thing could be said about South Africa – but to the positive side. Their numbers are not reflective of what they are able to do. Their defense, led by Khuliso Mudau and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, has been incredibly stingy. They largely held Mexico in check in the second half, despite playing with 10 men. They also limited a desperate South Korean squad as they pushed for a late goal to try to continue their tournament. This defense and physicality is going to be trouble for the Canadians. I expect a low scorer with South Africa finding a winner in stoppage.
Best Bets for South Africa/Canada: South Africa to Advance (+240) and Under 2.5 Goals (-105)
