Daily World Cup Best Bets – June 27th

Croatia vs. Ghana

Kickoff – 5:00 pm EST
Lincoln Financial Field – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – FS1

While both of these teams could still technically win the group, the assumption is that they are more likely playing for second and third. The good news for them is that both could achieve a spot in the knockout stage with a draw. That’s not to say that neither will look to win, but the tactics are likely going to reflect more of a defensive priority.

That’s already been the case for Ghana – both in the World Cup and leading up to it. Through their last six qualifying games, they allowed just one goal. We saw that work again in matchday two with England. This reads like a 0-0 draw, but 1-1 wouldn’t shock me either.

Best Bets for Croatia/Ghana: Draw (+215) and Under 2.5 Goals (-170)

Panama vs. England

Kickoff – 5:00 pm EST
MetLifeStadium – East Rutherford, New Jersey
Broadcast – FOX

As previously mentioned, the assumption is that England is going to win this group. They are tied with Ghana for the top spot with four points, but have a one goal advantage when it comes to goal differential. With the way that England is creating up front in this group, that should be safe for them to maintain, and maybe add to.

While Panama has only given up one goal in each game, the expected goals show us that they’ve been a bit lucky in those regards. Additionally, they play on their heels for the bulk of the first half and really only seem to attack once they’re down. With guys like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham up front creating, Panama won’t be able to sit back long.

Best Bets for Panama/England: England -2.5 (+110) and Over 3.5 Goals (+120)

Congo DR vs. Uzbekistan

Kickoff – 7:30 EST
Mercedes-Benz Stadium – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – FS1

The Congolese may enter action with just a point, but they have a real chance to qualify for a knockout spot here. A win over Uzbekistan will jump them up to the top of the third place table and clinch them a spot.

There’s a good chance that happens here, as Congo’s defense has been stellar. Led by Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, their five-back formation makes it hard for any team to get going. As a result, they’ve conceded more than one goal in just one of their last 15 international contests.

Uzbekistan, on the other hand, has looked like they forgot to play defense at times. I expect Congo to get at least one counter goal on them and then park the bus for the win.

Best Bets for Congo DR/Uzbekistan: Congo DR ML (-160) and Under 2.5 Goals (-140)

Colombia vs. Portugal

Kickoff – 7:30 pm EST
Hard Rock Stadium – Miami Gardens, Florida
Broadcast – FOX

With both of these teams having clinched a spot in the next stage, expect them to play free and confident. That bodes well for a Portugal team that has been possessing the ball really well. While the level of competition in this group may have not been particularly high, they averaged over 70% possession in the first two games. Meanwhile their passing accuracy sat in the 90% range in each game as well.

Colombia is going to bring them more pressure than Congo or Uzbekistan did. However, I think we see their abilities hold up here. With little on the line, I do expect both teams to take more chances and wind up with a high scoring contest.

Best Bets for Colombia/Portugal: Portugal ML (-105) and Over 3.5 Goals (+200)

Jordan vs. Argentina

Kickoff – 10:00 pm EST
AT&T Stadium – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – FOX

The news out of Texas is that Lionel Messi will start this one on the bench. While the Argentina brass have stated that he’s going to get minutes, it sort of takes the lustre off this game. It’s also taking some of the lustre off of the sportbooks’ expectations. Argentina is averaging a 2.5 goal victory and are now facing the worst team in the group. Expecting them to not blow this one sky-high is insane – Messi or not.

Best Bets for Jordan/Argentina: Argentina -2.5 (+120) and Over 3.5 Goals (+125)

Algeria vs. Austria

Kickoff – 10:00 pm EST
Arrowhead Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – FS1

These two teams have seen near identical results in the tournament so far. They were both blown out by a Messi-show and then conceded a goal to Jordan in a mostly easy win. This puts them in a position where a draw is good enough to advance for both squads.

While it might seem like Algeria should go for it and try to grab that second spot, they would actually be in a far better position if they take third place. The second place finisher gets Spain in the round of 32. Meanwhile, a third place finish for Algeria would mean a showdown with Switzerland, Belgium or possibly Ghana. As a result, I’ll count on them to play reserved and look for the draw.

Best Bets for Algeria/Austria: Draw (+105) and Under 0.5 Goals (+340)
