Daily World Cup Best Bets – June 23rd

Portugal vs. Uzbekistan

Kickoff – 1:00 pm EST
NRG Stadium – Houston, Texas
Broadcast – FOX

I was not impressed by Portugal in their opening contest. After finding the back of the net just six minutes in, they struggled to make any meaningful threats to the goal. What’s worse is that they had 75% possession against Congo DR and still only put one shot on goal. That power outage should be a concern for anyone holding a future on this squad, but it shouldn’t be an issue on Tuesday.

Uzbekistan looked out of their element in a 3-1 loss to Colombia. They played physically, but really lacked the ability to string together passes to get the ball deep. While Portugal is obviously the side to back, we are also going to look to the under with as bad as these two looked up front.

Best Bets for Portugal/Uzbekistan: Portugal -1.5 (-180) and Under 3.5 Goals (-175)

England vs. Ghana

Kickoff – 4:00 pm EST
Gillette Stadium – Foxborough, Massachusetts
Broadcast – FOX

While I was unimpressed with Portugal’s offensive output, I felt the exact opposite about England. I was a bit of a pessimist as to what their offense would be able to do, but Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane proved that to be silly. They brought constant pressure for the whole game and kept Croatia scrambling. While the style is going to open themselves up for plenty of counters, the play in the back by Jordan Pickford should bail them out enough to get the win.

Ghana relied on many of those counters in their opener. They were badly outpossessed by Panama despite picking up a shutout win. The counter attacking should help them find the back of the net once or twice here, but I still expect them to drop this.

Best Bets for England/Ghana: England ML (-450) and Over 3.5 (+180)

Panama vs. Croatia

Kickoff – 7:00 pm EST
BMO Field – Toronto, Canada
Broadcast – FOX

Croatia found themselves playing with their back against the ropes for the bulk of the first game. The aggression of England had them reacting to situations more than setting things up themselves. The slow possessive style of Panama should be a stark contrast in this game. With more freedom to get things going, look for Mario Pasalic to help build to the front more effectively and Croatia to pick up a low scoring win.

Best Bets for Panama/Croatia: Croatia ML (-205) and Under 2.5 Goals (+100)

Colombia vs. Congo DR

Kickoff – 10:00 pm EST
Estadio Akron – Guadalajara, Mexico
Broadcast – FS1

Colombia might look like an offensive juggernaut after their first game, but that’s largely due to the play in the back from Uzbekistan. They made the most of nearly every chance that they had in the game, which seems less likely in this one.

The Congolese back five looked strong and matched Portugal step-for-step. Led by Axel Tuanzebe and Chancel Mbemba, I expect those chances to be few and far between for Colombia and a low scoring game should be in the mix.

Best Bets for Colombia/Congo DR: Congo DR +0.5 (+145) and Under 2.5 Goals (-155)
