MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 21
Cincinnati Reds vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’ll start our first NRFI with the Reds at the plate. They ripped the Yankees for 10 runs on Saturday, but that brings them up to just 11 over the last three games. That’s just about been their pace all year as they rank 18th in the majors in run scoring. Now they’ll face 22-year old rookie, Elmer Rodriguez. While a rookie might make some people nervous, he’s looked sharp in his first three starts. He comes in with a 4.15 ERA and has kept the first inning clean in two of those three starts. Not only that, but he also is coming off his best start – 4.1 innings against the Mets with just one run allowed.
Dealing with a rookie might be a scary proposition in an NRFI, but so is dealing with the bats of the Yankees. While the Yankees have been really good with the bats this year, they have been in a mini-slump as of late. They’ve put up just eight total runs over their last three games, which includes being held to two runs on Saturday. If someone is going to keep that run going, it’s Chase Burns. His 2.02 ERA has him ranked in the top five in the league. Not only that, but he’s fanned 95 batters in just 80.2 innings. With the Yankees having some big swing and miss in their lineup, he should be able to fan his way through the first.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 21: No (+100)
Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Red Sox continue to be one of my favorite teams to tail for an NRFI. The first reason is that they have been awful at the plate. They rank 29th in the majors with 3.96 runs per game. Additionally, they have been even worse in the first inning. In that category, they rank dead last with 0.28 runs per game. Logan Gilbert isn’t going to make that any easier on them. He has allowed just five runs over his last five starts (30.0 innings). That gives him a 1.50 ERA in that run and should be plenty to keep the Red Sox off the board.
The second reason we like to tail the Sox is their surplus of young, solid pitching. Payton Tolle is one of the best of those options and he toes the rubber on Sunday. He’s posting over a strikeout per inning while maintaining a 2.93 ERA. His ERA over the last two months has actually been better than that as he’s settled into his role. It should be simple enough for him to keep the first inning blank in this one. The Mariners rank in the bottom third of the league in runs scored and first inning scoring.
