Daily World Cup Best Bets – June 22nd
Argentina vs. Austria
Kickoff – 1:00 pm EST
AT&T Stadium – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – FOX
The books seem to be putting some respect on Austria’s name after grabbing a 3-1 win over Jordan in the tournament opener. However, there are some key signs that the score of that game might not be reflected in the level of talent moving forward. Firstly, they got a bit lucky for the chances they created. They only put up 1.69 expected goals in that game despite putting three away. That’s largely due to a penalty shot and an own goal creating two of them. Additionally, for as bad of a squad as they were playing, they didn’t really blow them out of the water with possession.
Now they’ll get a massive step up in Argentina – a squad that seems to be as good as advertised. On the heels of another Messi hat trick, they handled Algeria easily. They should bring that same aggression and nose for the goal en route to a victory here.
Best Bets for Argentina/Austria: Argentina ML (-190) and Over 2.5 Goals (-110)
France vs. Iraq
Kickoff – 5:00 pm EST
Lincoln Financial Field – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – FOX
There’s really not a huge breakdown needed for this one. France is the favorite of the group and the whole tournament in most books. Iraq’s defense looked like Swiss cheese against Norway. While Iraq does seem to be dangerous when counter attacking, they likely won’t get many chances to do that here. Look for the balanced approach from France to put the pressure on early and often.
Best Bets for France/Iraq: France -2.5 (-135) and Over 3.5 Goals (-110)
Norway vs. Senegal
Kickoff – 8:00 pm EST
MetLife Stadium – East Rutherford, New Jersey
Broadcast – FOX
The end result of Senegal’s opener looked rough – a 3-1 loss at the hands of the favorites from France. However, I don’t believe that really tells the whole story. They kept France at bay for the first 65 minutes of the game, and the score was just 1-0 as they entered minute 82. Senegal passed the ball well and kept possession against France early – which has got to be a good sign as they get a step down here.
On the other side, Norway’s first result looks good. They trounced Iraq by a score of 4-1, but that’s a bigger statement about their opponents than it is about them. We know that they have a big physical front – headlined by Erling Haaland – that gives smaller teams fits. Senegal has a fairly large defensive back line – averaging over 6’0″ in height and with plenty of size to go along with it. That should help them keep this one close.
Best Bets for Norway/Senegal: Draw (+255) and Over 2.5 Goals (-115)
Jordan vs. Algeria
Kickoff – 11:00 pm EST
Levi’s Stadium – Santa Clara, California
Broadcast – FS1
In the nightcap, we have a pair of teams who are looking to find footing after rough first games. The difference for me is that Algeria showed signs of life in their game. They had some solid counters and had real chances against a tough Argentina team. Jordan had long stretches where they were packed in the back and seemed like they couldn’t get out of their own way.
Algeria is likely the better team and it may not be particularly close.
Best Bets for Jordan/Algeria: Algeria -1.5 (+155) and Over 3.5 Goals (+225)
