MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 18

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Blue Jays get their ups first on Thursday’s matinee, and they’ve been struggling at the plate lately. They’ve scored just 13 runs over their last four games and have fallen to 23rd in the majors in run scoring. That’s actually not nearly as bad as their first inning scoring. Their 0.41 first inning runs per game has them ranked 27th in the majors. Sonny Gray and his 3.03 ERA is unlikely to help matters. Not only has he put up an 8-1 record on a brutal team, but we’ve seen an uptick in strikeouts lately. He should get us through the first frame quickly.

The bottom of the first may wind up being even easier to cash. The Red Sox rank 29th in the majors in scoring – only ahead of the Padres. Even worse, they are dead last in the majors in first inning scoring at just 0.30 runs per game. They were shutout on Wednesday and have scored just once in the last 19 innings. Trey Yesavage has been hit around a bit lately, but I would take a pitching machine to get the Red Sox out right now.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 18: No (-135)

Baltimore Orioles vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Our afternoon action starts with Bryan Woo on the bump. His numbers are like a roller coaster this year. He’s been hit around on occasion, but then other times he’s lights out. In three of his last seven outings, he’s kept his opponents scoreless. Baltimore got to him a bit last time they faced, but it wasn’t until the second time through the order. He put up a perfect 1-2-3 first inning with a pair of strikeouts. I’ll look for that again here.

The Mariners are the next to come to the plate, and they’ve also been struggling to score. They have just 10 runs over the course of the last four games – 2.50 runs per game. That’s dropped them to 19th in run scoring and into the bottom third of the league for first inning scoring. Plus, they’re catching Shane Baz at the worst possible time. While his 4.06 ERA is not scary, he’s now put together five straight starts with two runs or less allowed. In that span, he’s posted a 2.05 ERA and struck out 25 in 30.2 innings.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 18: No (-125)
