MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 15

New York Yankees vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – Apple TV

Kicking off this NRFI play is a sweat with the Yankees at the plate. They continue to be one of the best hitting teams in the league and are always a home run threat. However, we’re going to put our trust in Clay Holmes. The Mets righty has been sensational this year. He’s sporting a 1.86 ERA and has eight straight games allowing two or less earned runs. He’s also picked up his strikeout numbers – fanning at least six in each of his last three games. That should help him against this strikeout prone Yankees lineup.

In the bottom of the inning we’ll have much less worry. The Mets are terrible this year and nothing can hide that fact. Not only are they not winning games, but they rank 28th in run scoring with just 3.74 runs per game. That makes them one of just four teams with less than 4.00 runs per game. Additionally, they are in the bottom third of the league in first inning run scoring. To make matters all the worse for them, Cam Schlittler will be toeing the rubber on Friday. The AL Cy Young frontrunner is sporting a 1.35 ERA and has 59 strikeouts in just 53.1 innings. He’s thrown five straight games allowing one run or less and his should add to that streak.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 15: No (-145)

Kansas City Royals vs. St. Louis Cardinals

First Pitch – 8:15 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

Dustin May will be first on the bump in our second NRFI selection. He started the year particularly rocky, but has setted in nicely since then. He allowed six and seven runs in those first two starts. Since then, he has allowed just 10 total earned runs over 35.1 innings – a 2.55 ERA in that span. With the Royals ranking 25th in runs scored (4.11 per game), May should be able to breeze through that first inning.

In the bottom of the first, we’ll see the red-hot Michael Wacha. He’s fresh off his best start of the year, going 7.0 scoreless against the Tigers with just two hits allowed. That lowered his season ERA to just 2.63. While the Cardinals are a bit better than the Royals at the plate, they are still not anything to write home about. They rank around the middle of the league in all of the important metrics, and that should be enough for Wacha to get through clean.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 15: No (-120)
