MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 14

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Athletics

First Pitch – 3:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

To kick off this NRFI, the Athletics send out Jacob Lopez. Some might see the ERA and get scared away from this selection, but he’s actually been fairly sharp lately. He’s held his opponents to two or less runs in three of his last four starts. His WHIP is just a touch over 1.00 in that span and that’s inflated by his lone bad start against Cleveland. St. Louis is a middle of the pack offense who does not particularly hit a lot of dingers. Lopez should be able to keep them in the park early and get this one started right.

In the bottom of the first, we’ll get Michael McGreevy toeing the rubber. While he’s not exactly a household name at this point, he is putting up those kind of numbers. He’s rocking a 2.18 ERA on the year and hasn’t allowed a run in 14.0 innings. If someone is going to break that run, I wouldn’t count on it being the Athletics – especially in the first inning. They’re in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring and are averaging just 3.67 runs per game in their last three.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 14: No (+105)

Chicago Cubs vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’re playing with fire again by putting these two offenses on our card. They both rank in the top three of runs scored this year with the Braves ranking at the top. However, neither of these juggernauts get going early. The Braves, despite all their success, rank 17th in first inning scoring. The Cubs, on the other hand, rank 26th in that same category. The first two games of this series produced just 12 total runs. When we lay that all out, the attack from these squads seems less alarming.

In addition to the offenses being a touch less scary, we also have some great arms to help mitigate the risk. Chris Sale is fist on the bump and he’s looked as advertised this year. He enters action Thursday with a 2.20 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 49.0 innings. He’s only allowed more than two earned runs in one start this year. His counterpart, Ben Brown, has also been outstanding. While mostly working out of the bullpen, he has a 1.82 ERA. He nabbed a start against the Rangers last week and threw 4.0 scoreless. With as slow as the Braves often start, Brown should be able to dial in three quick outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 14: No (-150)
