MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 7

Cleveland Guardians vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

At the plate first in this NRFI will be the Guardians. They have not been a solid team at the plate at all this year. Their 4.05 runs per game comes in at 23rd in the majors and they’re also in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. Those things should only get harder as Seth Lugo toes the rubber. Lugo is sporting just a 2.68 ERA on the season and has two or less runs allowed in six of his seven outings on the year. If someone is going to disrupt that trend, it doesn’t feel like it’ll be the Royals.

The bottom of the first is going to bring a bit more of a sweat. That’s not because of the bats though. The Royals rank 28th in the majors in first inning scoring and 22nd in scoring overall. They put up just one run on Wednesday and seemed overmatched at the plate. The sweat will instead come from Slade Cecconi, who has struggled a bit early on in the season. He’s had issues with homers and walks in some of his starts. However, I like him to overcome those here against a Kansas City squad who is below average with both of those.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 7: No (-115)

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 7:00 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – ESPN

Red Sox NRFIs have been very kind to us this year. One of the main reasons is that they just keep wheeling out arms that we don’t know and who can absolutely shove. We appear to have another of those on Thursday with Jake Bennett making his second start. He looked phenomenal in his first, allowing just one run to the Astros over 5.0 innings. He kept the hits and walks in check as well, which is promising moving forward. Tampa Bay is just a middle of the pack team in most offensive categories and the trend is downward. As a result, I like a clean first frame here for the youngster.

To close out this NRFI play, we’ll look to the sad offensive state of the Red Sox. They’ve also been a gold mine for NRFI plays thanks to the fact that they can’t hit very well. They rank 24th in the majors in runs and hve been even worse in the first inning. Over the 37 games they’ve played this year, they’ve scored just nine first inning runs total. Griffin Jax will be used as an opener and he’s thrown a pair of scoreless starts for the Rays. Granted those starts have totaled just 5.0 innings, but they have also only seen two hits and two walks total.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 7: No (-135)
