MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 27
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 6:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
Parker Messick has ascended into the top five of Rookie of the Year voting odds, and for good reason. The lefty has been dealing all season. He now sports a 1.76 ERA over five starts, with 29 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. He’s allowed just one homer all year long and the Guardians have yet to lose a game with him on the bump. Tampa Bay is in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. Messick should be able to keep that quiet for that first frame and beyond.
Cleveland hasn’t exactly set the world on fire with their bats lately either. They rank 23rd in the majors with 4.07 runs per game and scored just two runs on Sunday. That’s good news for Steven Matz, who has been up and down this year. He has three quality starts in five outings this season. Additionally, he’s 3-2 at keeping a first frame clean. With a slightly easier lineup to get through on Monday, Matz should be able to finish this NRFI play for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 27: No (-140)
Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Red Sox are becoming one of my favorite teams to play on the NRFI. Not only do they have an excellent pitching staff, but their offense is underperforming where we thought they’d be. They are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to run scoring. Also, their 0.18 first inning runs per game puts them in 28th in the majors. Facing Dylan Cease shouldn’t help matters there. He is rocking a 2.10 ERA on the year with 44 strikeouts – 3rd in the majors. He’s allowed just three earned runs over his last 16.0 innings and I can’t expect the Red Sox to change that run.
The aforementioned solid pitching for the Red Sox will be represented by Ranger Suarez on Monday. He’s been stellar over his last three starts – allowing just four earned runs in 18.2 innings (a 1.93 ERA). Toronto is another team that is falling short of expectations in the early part of this season. Their 4.08 runs per game has them in 22nd in the majors. Suarez should make quick work of them and cash us a second NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 27: No (-150)
