MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 25

Los Angeles Angels vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Kaufmann Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

We hit a NRFI on Friday with this series and we’re going to ride with it again. Starting on the bump for Kansas City in this one will be Cole Ragans. While his season has been up and down, he still looks like he has that dominatnt stuff. He gave up three homers in his last start, but that was a road start in Yankee stadium – hardly a cause for too much concern. Kaufmann Stadium is playing as one of the least homer friendly stadiums this year (per Statcast Park Factors). In addition, Ragans had allowed just three total runs in the three games prior. With a more average lineup in front of him, he should roll.

In the bottom of the first, we get a fresh face in Walbert Urena. The 22-year old righty has just three appearances in his whole career and picked up his first start last time out. Against the Padres, he went 6.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs. Not only that, but he also managed to fan eight batters. With the Royals being the worst team in the league at scoring in the first – just two runs over 26 games – Urena should be able to get going early here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 25: No (-130)

Athletics vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

We also played this series on Friday – albeit less successfully. However, for a lot of the same reasons, we’re digging in on Saturday.

The first big reason is that the Athletics have been terrible at the plate early in the game. Despite throwing up a three-spot in the first inning on Friday, they have scored just 0.27 first inning runs per game, which has them in 27th place. In 26 games, they have scored in the first inning during just three of them. That shouldn’t get easier with MacKenzie Gore on the bump. He may have had an up and down season, but the strikeout stuff has played up. He’s fanned 35 guys in just 26.0 innings and should add to that here.

Texas is not much better when it comes to scoring in the first. They rank 26th in first inning scoring at 0.36 per game. Not only are they nearly as bad in the early part of the game, but they are facing a pitcher who looks just as sharp as Gore. Jeffery Springs has maintained a 3.34 ERA – largely thanks to allowing two runs or fewer in four of his five starts. He faced Texas earlier this year and allowed just one run in 6.1 innings. He should be able to help close the door on this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 25: No (-130)
