MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 22
Baltimore Orioles vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kaufmann Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
Michael Wacha will look to get our NRFI action started right, and boy has his season started right. He’s thrown 27.0 innings this season and allowed just three earned runs (1.00 ERA). He’s also fanned 23 batters while allowing just 13 total hits. Right now, you’d take him in an NRFI situation against just about any team. However, it should be even easier with the Orioles at the plate. They rank 27th in first inning scoring with just 0.13 first inning runs per game. Wacha should get three quick here and extend that bad luck for Baltimore.
The bottom of the inning sees Chris Bassitt toe the rubber. While his season stats look significantly worse than Wacha’s, he’s really found his form in his last two starts. In that span he’s thrown 9.2 innings and allowed just a single earned runs. That comes on the heels of 5.0 shutout innings against the Guardians last time out. He should be able to build on that against the Royals, who have been one of the worst offensive teams in the majors. They rank 28th in the majors in run scoring and have managed just one first inning run over 24 games – good enough for dead last.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 22: No (-115)
New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV
It’s always a little nerve-racking to grab an NRFI play against the Yankees, but this is far more about putting out trust in Ranger Suarez. The lefty has been lights out in his last two starts – going 14.0 innings and not allowing a single run. What’s more impressive is that in that span, he’s also only allowed five hits and has struck out 10. Basically, in those two games, he’s been exactly what the Red Sox signed him for.
Max Fried has not been nearly as sharp in his last few outings, but is still sporting some solid numbers on the year. He’s rocking a 2.97 ERA on the year and has a 0.81 WHIP (6th in the majors amongst qualified pitchers). He’ll get the additional bonus of facing a Boston lineup that isn’t setting the world on fire this season. They rank just 24th in runs scored with only 3.87 scored per game. They’ve managed just 12 runs over their last five games, which comes out to 2.4 runs per game. Fried should be able to find the early outs and get this thing cashed for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 22: No (-150)
