MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 20

Baltimore Orioles vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

One of my favorite NRFI selections for Monday is primarily about the hitting. Neither of these two squads have been all that hot with the bats this season. Kansas City currently ranks dead last in the majors in scoring with just 3.23 runs per game. They are also last in first inning scoring – they have just one first inning run scored all year. The Orioles are only a touch better than that. They’ve scored just three first inning runs in 22 games this year. They’ve also scored just 14 runs over their last four games combined (3.50 runs per game in that span).

While it’s mostly about the hitting, the pitching doesn’t scare me off here either. In fact, Seth Lugo is a huge boost to NRFI bettors. He’s rocking a 1.49 ERA on the year and carries a sub-1.00 WHIP on the year. The Orioles side of things is a touch of a concern. Kyle Bradish has been hit around a bit this year. However, his big strikeout stuff should play against the top of the Royals lineup. He’s picked up 21 strikeouts in just 19.2 innings this year.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 20: No (-115)

Athletics vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first should be quick and easy for NRFI bettors in this one. The Athletics are tied with the Royals for dead last in the majors in first inning scoring. They’ve still only scored one run in the first inning over 22 games this season. Emerson Hancock shouldn’t make it any easier on them. His 2.28 ERA and 25 strikeouts over 23.2 innings show just how hard it is to get a piece of this guy. The Athletics don’t strike me as the team that is suddenly going to have him figured out.

The bottom of the inning might be a bit more of a sweat, but not by much. Seattle ranks 23rd in the league in run scoring with just 3.91 runs per game. They’re scoring even less over the last four games – just 3.50 runs per game. Although less proven than Hancock, JT Ginn getting the ball should also help things along. Since moving to the rotation, he has been phenomenal for the Athletics. In two starts for the squad, he has put up a 1.93 ERA and hasn’t given up a run in the first or second inning in either game.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 20: No (-115)
