MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 18
Kansas City Royals vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
We flirted with fire on a Yankees NRFI on Friday and we’re doubling down on Saturday. Although the Yankees are a high powered offense, they have been in an outage recently. They’ve managed just 14 runs over their last four games, which comes out to 3.50 runs per game. In addition to New York being in a bit of a slump, I also trust the arm of Noah Cameron. The Royals lefty has not allowed a first inning run this year. In addition, he is elite at keeping the ball in the park – a trait needed to keep the Yankees in check. He threw 138.1 innings last year and allowed just 18 dingers.
The bottom of the inning should be less of a sweat with the Royals at the dish. They have scored just one first inning run all year (20 games). That puts them dead last in the majors in first inning scoring. They aren’t much better across the whole game, ranking 29th in the league in run scoring in general. Will Warren should be able to keep that streak going. He carries a 2.45 ERA into Saturday’s action with 20 strikeouts in just 18.1 innings.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 18: No (-130)
Chicago White Sox vs. Athletics
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
This is a game that’s far more about the lame bats than it is about the solid pitching. Both of these teams rank in the bottom third of the league when it comes to run scoring – with the White Sox coming in all the way down at 26th. They also rank in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. In fact, much like the Royals, the Athletics have scored just once in the first inning all year. That puts them into a share of last place with a 0.05 runs per first inning average. I’d take pitching machines to get us through an NRFI here.
It won’t be pitching machines in action though. First to the bump will be Luis Severino, who has been hit or miss this year. However, a lot of that can be attributed to facing some tough teams. The positive news is that he has struck out seven in each of his last three starts, which should help him in the first here. Closing out the NRFI will be Erick Fedde. Some may be hesitant to put faith in the journeyman, but he’s been sharp. He’s coming off an out where he went 5.0 innings and allowed just one run on a solo home run. He limited the Royals to three hits overall as well. The arms may not be ideal, but with as bad as the bats are, this should cash.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 18: No (-110)
