MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 17
Kansas City Royals vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first features one of the worst first inning teams in the majors. The Royals have managed just a single first-inning run all season, which put them in a tie for last place alongside the Athletics. To make matters worse for them, they’ll be dealing with Cam Schlittler. He’s rocking a 2.49 ERA at this stage of the season with 30 strikeouts in just 21.2 innings pitched. If the Royals are going to come out of this early game slump, it likely won’t be at the expense of Schlittler.
The bottom of the first is a lot scarier in terms of offense. The Yankees can obviously slug – particularly at the top of their order. However, they’ve struggled to find runs a bit lately, scoring just ten over their last three games combined. Now they’ll face the white-hot Michael Wacha. The veteran has thrown 21.0 innings this year and allowed just one run. He’s also fanned 17 batters in the process. Those numbers should help him against a Yankees squad who does swing and miss a lot.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 17: No (-125)
San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Angels
First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first in the nightcap also has a white-hot pitcher. Jose Soriano has been one of the very best in the league this year. Over 27.0 innings pitched thusfar, he’s tallied 31 strikeouts to go along with just one earned run. That comes out to an amazing 0.33 ERA for the season. I’d trust Soriano against just about anyone this year, but I would especially trust him against the Padres. They currently rank 28th in first inning runs with just two over 19 games.
The bottom of the inning features a pitcher who we may have quite a bit more concerns with. Matt Waldron may not be the guy you want to put faith into being that he has only thrown one game since the 2024 season. He’s been out with injuries. However, unlike guys who rely on velocity, Waldron relies on movement. That should mean that he can come back in effectively and look closer to his old self. The Angels have been slightly above average in offense this year, but I’m going to hope the knuckleball can keep them off the board for three outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 17: No (-120)
