MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – March 31

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’ve rode with this series for game one and we’re not getting off yet. A large part of that has been just how bad each of these teams have been with the bat. Despite sitting at 3-1 on the year, the Reds have scored a meager 11 total runs – coming in at 2.75 per game average. They put up just two in the first game and not until their lineup went quiet the first time through. The Pirates have scored just 13 runs. Although that’s better, they were shutout on Monday and only had four total hits.

Another reason I like this spot for the NRFI is the pitching. Bubba Chandler flashed some high level stuff in a short stint last season. His 31 strikeouts in 31.1 innings is only topped by the fact that his stuff is electric. Brandon Williamson gets the ball for the Reds in this one. He seemingly has much less swing and miss in his game, but put together a respectable campaign in both 2023 and 2024 before losing 2025 to injury. He should have good enough stuff here to keep the Reds quiet for an inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 31: No (-155)

Boston Red Sox vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game also pits a set of bats that are not exactly lively at the moment. The Red Sox have struggled across just 11 runs so far on the year and are one of just of eight teams that has yet to score a first inning run. The Astros are hitting much better than that at the moment, but they aren’t exactly setting the world on fire with the top of their order. They have just two first inning runs, which goes along with being one of the five worst teams in the league last year in that category.

Astros ace Hunter Brown gets the ball for the second time this year. In his first game, he struggle with some walk issues, but ultimately exited with 4.2 scoreless innings. The nine strikeouts is a nice touch and should help him if he gets into an early jam with this Boston team. The Res Sox will trot out Brayan Bello, who came out of the gate strong last season. It wasn’t until he wore down a bit that his numbers really started to slip. He’s also got a solid past against Houston – having thrown 12.1 innings with just three earned runs and eight strikeouts.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 31: No (-145)
