MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – March 30

Texas Rangers vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 6:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first sees the Orioles debut for Chris Bassitt. After helping the Blue Jays to the World Series with another sub 4.00 ERA season with 150+ strikeouts, he hit out on free agency and landed here. He’ll get a favorable first matchup with a Texas team that has struggled to score runs this season. Despite sitting in first, they are scoring just 5.33 runs per game and have only scored once in the first inning. They’ve also been struggling with strikeouts – ranking in the top five of the league with 11.7 fans a game.

In the bottom of the first, we get a team that is struggling even more at the plate. Baltimore has yet to score a first inning run on the short season and they are averaging only 3.7 runs per game. Things aren’t likely to get much easier with Jack Leiter on the bump. He closed the last two month of last season with a sub-3.50 ERA and had really picked up the numbers with the strikeouts. He, again, looked good in Spring Training and should be able to keep this slumping Orioles offense in the dumps.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 30: No (+105)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Pirates have been a little more active early in the game than some of the teams discussed, but they have scored just 13 runs over their first three games. Their offense is not built for power and they have the ill fortune of a live arm to stop them. Chase Burns hits the hill on Monday in effort to keep them quiet. His strikeout stuff has always been electric. He struck out 67 guys in 43.1 innings during last season. That swing and miss stuff should help him if he does run into any early struggles, but I don’t anticipate any of that here.

In the bottom of the first, we get another team that has been slow out of the gate. While they took two of three in the series with the Red Sox, they only scored nine runs in the process. Right now I would take a pitching machine to give me a clean first inning against the Reds. However, we’ll get something quite a bit better than that with Braxton Ashcraft. He rocked a 2.71 ERA over 69.2 innings last season and never gave up more than three runs in an outing. With his big arm on the bump, we should get out of this NRFI without much of a sweat.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 30: No (-150)
