MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – March 29

Texas Rangers vs. Philadelphia Phillies

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

On the hitting side of things, we’ve seen very little offense in this series. In game one, there was only eight runs scored, with three of them being scored in the last inning. Just nine were scored in the next game, but three of those came in the ninths with three more in extra innings. If you lop off the 9th inning, this series has seen just eight total runs scored in two games. It’s not just run scoring either, there have not been a ton of hits either. The Phillies entered the 9th inning on Saturday having recorded just one hit. Those offenses have not yet given us an NRFI, but with as bad as they’re swinging, it should be coming.

Not only are the offenses slumping, but this is a good pitching matchup on Sunday. First to the bump is Jesus Luzardo, who ended up in the top five in the league in strikeouts. The lefty kept his ERA under 4.00 in each of the last two months of last season and in the postseason. He’ll be paired with MacKenzie Gore who makes his first start as a member of the Texas Rangers. He, too, was in the top 25 of strikeouts and has a solid career record against the Phillies. Last year he opened the season with 6.0 shutout innings against them while recording 13 strikeouts.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 29: No (-130)

Boston Red Sox vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – ESPN Unlimited

Rhett Lowder is on the bump first on Sunday – getting his first start since 2024. He spent the entire last year on the IL dealing with some forearm soreness and an oblique strain. However, before that, he was lights out. He came up for a six-game cup of coffee in 2024. In that span, he threw four scoreless outings and had a 1.17 ERA. The Red Sox have not yet scored a first inning run this year and I don’t think it’ll be changing on the back of Lowder.

On the other side, we have another young arm in Connelly Early. Early has had a similarly small body of work. He pitched just five games last year and gave us a clean first frame in four of them. In addition to keeping his opponents in check, he also has solid strikeouts stuff – recording 22 in just 19.1 innings last season. Now he’ll get a Reds team that just can’t get going with the bats this season. They have just six runs scored over a two game span with one coming in the 11th inning on Saturday. Early should have no problem keeping them quiet.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 29: No (-140)
