All-Time World Cup Top Goal Scorers

When looking at the history of the FIFA World Cup, there’s a small group of players that clearly stand out from the rest. The all-time goals record is currently with Germany’s Miroslav Klose, with 16 that were scored across four tournaments. Closely behind, we have Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazario on 15, with German legend Gerd Muller coming in third on 14.

Behind the top three, we have a cluster of players who sit on 13. These include Just Fontaine, who managed to score all 13 in a single tournament back in 1958, and Lionel Messi, who took five outings to reach the same total.

With the 2026 tournament almost here, it’s worth taking a look at who could get near the record, or even exceed it.

Players Who Could Break the Record in 2026

Perhaps the player with the best chance of breaking through the 16 mark is Kylian Mbappe. He already has 12 goals, meaning that he is just four behind, while still being in his prime. Given the rate at which he scores and the fact that France tends to progress well, there’s a great chance that he could become the new record holder.

England captain Harry Kane is also worth keeping an eye on. Admittedly, he is not yet near the all-time record, but he’s consistent with goal scoring for both club and country. This means that he’s certainly a strong contender for the Golden Boot, even if he doesn’t get near the record.

Outside of those names, players like Erling Haaland could emerge as contenders if Norway qualify and make an impact. However,  he would need to take part in multiple tournaments to reach record levels.

Why the Record Is So Hard to Beat

The thing with the World Cup scoring record is that it requires more than simply talent. Players need longevity, the ability to retain their fitness, and the presence of a strong national team around them. If you just look at Klose as an example, he scored across four tournaments and benefited from the fact that Germany consistently reaches the latter stages.

Modern football also makes things harder in some ways. Defensive systems are more structured, and squad rotation is more common, which can limit scoring opportunities over a single tournament.

Betting on World Cup Goals

If you’re a fan of betting on football, you probably already know that goal-scoring markets are hugely popular during the World Cup. At platforms such as LV BET, you get the chance to wager on things such as the tournament’s top scorer, individual match goals, or if a certain player will score at any time.

As an example, players such as Mbappe and Kane will often feature among the favourites for the Golden Boot. This is because they are generally the penalty takers, and they are the main attacking threat for their respective teams. Player form leading into the World Cup, the outcome of group stage matches, and team progression all have an impact on the odds offered.

Final Thoughts

The World Cup scoring record has stood since 2014, but 2026 could finally see it broken. With Mbappe closing in and experienced players like Messi and Kane still involved, the next tournament has the potential to reshape one of football’s most iconic records.
