MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 29
Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – TBS
The top of the first in this one is nothing to worry about. We have a middle of the pack Rays offense, which has been trending downward lately. In the three games prior to Monday, they had scored just five total runs (1.67 per game). If matters couldn’t get any worse for them here, they’ll get the mighty Max Fried on the bump. Fried carries a 2.62 ERA into action on Tuesday, which puts him 11th in the majors. That has ticked up a bit in the last handful of games. However, despite sputtering a bit here, he’s given up just one first inning run this month. That happened to be to the Cubs, who are looking a lot better with the bats than Tampa Bay.
The bottom of the inning is definitely the sweat in this one. The Rays will trot out Joe Boyle to try to close out this NRFI for us. While many of you are unlikely to have heard his name, he’s sporting a 1.42 ERA this season. In his five appearances this year, he has not given up a single run in his first inning. It’ll help Boyle that the Yankees are not exactly tearing the cover off the ball right now. They put up just 22 runs in their last five games (or 4.4 runs per game), which is notably lower than their season average.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 29: No (-120)
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
Once again, we are tempting the NRFI gods with a play against a big hitting team. The Phillies have been a top ten team all year with the bats. However, I’m going to take my chances with a pitcher who has been on a nice roll lately. Jonthan Cannon has posted some good numbers in his last five games. He has held opponents to two or fewer runs in four of those five games and has seen improved strikeout totals. With the Phillies having some issues with strikeouts lately, I like Cannon’s chances to get us a clean frame.
The bottom of the first should be much easier for us here. For once, the White Sox are one of the worst offensive teams in the league. They are one of five teams that come in south of four runs per game (3.75 on the year). Jesus Luzardo gets the ball for the Phillies, and while his recent numbers aren’t good, he comes out of the gate well. He’s been four straight games without allowing a first inning run. Those games come against much better hitters than this White Sox team employs – the Red Sox, the Angels, the Giants and the Reds. He should find us three quick outs in this one and clinch the NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 29: No (-115)
