MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 17

New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off our NRFI selections for Tuesday is a showdown between division rivals. The Mets get first hacks in this one with a tall task in front of them on the bump. Spencer Schwellenbach has been lights out for the Braves – posting a 3.11 ERA. He’s also been even hotter as of late. In his last four starts (28.1 innings), he’s struck out 35 batters. He’s also held opponents to just seven earned runs in that span, which comes out to a 2.22 ERA over those four games. At the pace he’s at, I’d trust him to keep just about any team in the league quiet.

The bottom of the inning should be a touch easier. That’s not necessarily because of the pitching matchup, but because the Braves offense has been lackluster this year. They currently rank 20th in the league in terms of runs scored with 4.14 per game. They’re even worse when it comes to scoring early. They rank 21st in that metric with 0.41 first inning runs per game. Then we can add in just how good David Peterson has been. He’s carrying a 2.49 ERA into action on Tuesday and is coming off his best outing of the year. He threw a complete game shutout last time out against the Nationals with six strikeouts.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 17: No (-105)

Kansas City royals vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first in this one is also a spot where we see a struggling offense. The Royals are one of the very worst teams in the league when it comes to putting up runs. They rank 29th in runs per game with just 3.29 per game. They are only a touch better ealry in the game – ranking 25th with 0.38 first inning runs per game. Facing Jack Leiter won’t make that all that much easier. He has allowed just five earned runs over his last three starts (14.2 innings). Additionally, he’s fanned 15 batters in that span as well.

The bottomg of the inning features a lineup that is only doing marginally better than the Royals. The Rangers are 26th in the league in terms of scoring with 3.68 runs per game. They similarly have a rough matchup in this one, as Seth Lugo gets the call. Lugo has posted great numbers all year. His 3.18 ERA looks solid, but it’s his recent starts that really make him look like an all-star. He’s coming off of a game with the hard hitting Yankees where he held them scoreless for 5.2 innings. If he can do that with New York, Kansas City should be a breeze.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 17: No (-120)
