MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 3
Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 7:35 pm EST
George M. Steinbrenner Field – Tampa, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
One of the best pitching matchups you’ll see on Tuesday doesn’t have a Strider or a Wheeler in it. It’s in Florida with a pair of pitchers who have been huge for their squads this season.
Drew Rasmussen takes the bump first in this one. He carries a 2.33 ERA into action on Tuesday with a sub-1.00 WHIP. More importantly, he’s been lights out in his last three starts. In 18.0 innings, he hasn’t allowed any runs and only nine total hits. His command has been good as well, posting only three walks in that span. The Rangers currently rank 26th in runs score, so I’d be surprised to see them upset this trend.
Closing out the NRFI would be Tyler Mahle. Mahle has been even better than Rasmussen this year. His ERA sits at a miniscule 1.64. He’s held his opponents to two or fewer runs in 11 of his 12 starts this year. To put a pin in this NRFI, he’ll need to keep this Tampa Bay lineup at bay. They aren’t quite as bad as the Rangers, but they do rank below average in runs scored and runs score in the first. With how well Mahle’s throwing, that’s good enough for me.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 3: No (-125)
Baltimore Orioles vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first, something has to give. On one hand, we have George Kirby, who has not been good in either of his starts this year. He’s been hit around the park and his stuff just hasn’t been good. However, on the other side, we have a Baltimore offense that isn’t exactly hitting the ball well. They rank 24th in scoring in the first inning (0.38 first inning runs per game) and 25th in scoring in general (3.83 per game). They’ve been rough at the plate lately too. Despite sweeping the White Sox, they scored only nine runs in that series.
The bottom of the inning is relying on the soft contact of Tomoyuki Sugano. The Orioles righty has been solid with a 3.23 ERA over 11 starts. Being that he’s not a big strikeout guy, his main way of staying that good has been inducing week contact. The Mariners are a team whose whole offense seems to run through the long ball. Facing a guy like Sugano should be a nightmare for them and should be perfect for our NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 3: No (-110)
