MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 30
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first sees the Cardinals come to the plate. While they’ve been a solid team at the plate this year, they haven’t been quite as good in the first inning. In fact, St. Louis ranks 27th in the majors when it comes to scoring in the opening frame. They’re posting just 0.34 per game in their first at bats. That should help out Jack Leiter, who has found his stride in his last few outings. In his last three games (18.0 innings), he’s allowed just six earned runs. That posts a 3.00 ERA in that span. Walks continue to be his biggest enemy, but with the Cardinals being below average in drawing them, he should have a clean first frame.
In the bottom of the first inning, we’ll see lefty Matthew Liberatore toe the rubber. He’s been sensational for the birds on the season. He has just a 2.73 ERA and has held three of his last four opponents to just one run. Additionally, his strikeout and walks numbers give me a lot of confidence here. He’s fanned 51 in 59.1 innings while only allowing eight walks. Texas has also been one of the very worst teams at scoring runs this season. They rank 28th in the league with 3.25 runs per game. They’ve also only scored three runs over their last three games.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 30: No (TBD)
Detorit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Kaufman Satdium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
For our second NRFI, we’ll sweat out the good bats of Detroit in the top of the first. While they’re one of the better scoring offenses in the majors, I feel confident that Seth Lugo can keep them under wraps for three outs. Lugo is coming off an extended rest due to a finger issue that appears to be worked out now. Even while pitching injured, he was putting up insane numbers. He allowed just six runs over his last four starts (26.2 innings) before hitting the IL. If he’s a fraction of that version of himself, we should get three quick ones here.
In the bottom of the inning, we’ll get a chance to see Casey Mize back in action. The Tigers righty has a 2.45 ERA on the year and has been even better lately. He’s allowed just one run in four of his last five starts. Mize has also seen an uptick in his strikeout numbers. He’s fanned 14 batters in his last 11.0 innings pitched. Just about any team would have trouble getting an early run off him, and Kansas City is one of the least likely to. They rank 27th in runs per game this season and 26th in first inning runs. Mize should have no problem keeping them at bay.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 30: No (TBD)
