MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 28
CinCinnati Reds vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kaufman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
Our first NRFI effort of the day comes to us from Kansas City. Noah Cameron toes the rubber first on Wednesday and while he might not be a household name (yet), he’s become a horse for the Royals. In his three starts (19.1 innings), he’s only allowed two earned runs – both on solo home runs. Additionally, his strikeout stuff showed up last time out as he fanned eight Twins in 6.1 innings. He’ll face a good hitting Reds team in this one, but with the run he’s on, I’d trust him for three outs against almost any team.
The bottom of the first brings us a far more familiar face on the bump with Hunter Greene getting the call. He carries a 2.54 ERA into action on Wednesday with 11.42 strikeouts per 9 innings. His last three starts have been arguably his best. He’s allowed just three earned runs in those starts while striking out 20. It’ll get easier for him as he faces the Royals, who rank 25th in first inning runs per game and 28th in overall run scoring. Greene should be able to blow a few by them to clinch this NRFI for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 28: No (-160)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
Kicking off this NRFI is a surprising Cy Young contender is Tyler Mahle. Entering his 10th year in the majors, you’d be surprised by this huge jump forward in numbers. He’s sporting a 1.80 ERA and already has five wins on the year – which would be his third highest career total if he didn’t get another all year. He very well could get that next win right here, as the Blue Jays’ bats have not been good. They rank 25th in runs per game at 3.83. They are even worse in the first inning, where they rank 29th in the majors – only ahead of the Astros.
The bottom of the inning will go to Eric Lauer, who is rocking a 3.31 ERA for the Blue Jays. He just started to get the nod to start for them. In his two starts, he has posted a blank first frame both times. Both of those starts came against better offenses than this Rangers one. They rank 27th in the majors in run scoring per game at 3.30. They have been particularly bad with the bats as of late. They’ve scored just three runs in the two games in this series and only 14 in their last five.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 28: No (-125)
