MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 10

New York Yankees vs. Athletics

First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first will see the Yankees get their hacks at JP Sears. While seeing the Yankees in a NRFI situation might be nerve-racking, consider that they haven’t been all that hot lately. In fact, they’ve been held to five runs or fewer in six of their last seven games. They’ve averaged just 3.5 runs per game in those contests. JP Sears has also been solid lately. He carries a 2.93 ERA into the weekend and has allowed just five earned runs in his last four starts. Those trends give me plenty of faith that this NRFI gets started right.

The bottom of the inning will see a much less potent offense from the home squad. They’ve still been a touch above league average on the year. While that’s still respectable, they’ll also face a pitcher who is on fire. Carlos Rodon toes the rubber to kick off the weekend along with his 2.96 ERA. He has 57 strikeouts on the year in just 48.2 innings. More importantly, for our sake, he’s held three of his last four opponents scoreless. The only game he allowed runs in saw him allowed two earned in just 6.0 innings. That should be enough to close out this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 10: No (+110)

Boston Red Sox vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

The evening game in Kansas City has the best pitching matchup on the day and is therefore one of my favorite NRFi spots. The Red Sox are a good hitting team, but they’ll have to score on Cole Ragans in order to upset our NRFI efforts. He’s coming off his best outing of the year, where he threw 5.0 innings and struck out 11 batters. He did all of that while keeping his opponent scoreless. Also, while the Sox have hit well on the year, the first inning hasn’t been their friend lately. They haven’t scored in the first inning in four games and took 11 innings to get on the board on Friday.

The bottom of the inning should be much less of a sweat. For one, the Royals aren’t that dangerous of a team with the bats. They rank 26th in runs scored on the year and also took 11 innings to score a run on Friday. Now they’ll have to try to break that trend against Cy Young frontrunner, Garrett Crochet. I can’t imagine the Royals getting on the board at all against his 2.02 ERA – never mind in the first inning. As a result, I’ll count on him to close up the NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 10: No (-170)
