MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 5

Chicago White Sox vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first on Monday, we’ll get one of the pre-season favorites for the AL Cy Young. While Cole Ragans maybe isn’t posting the numbers that we’d need for him to keep that trajectory, he’s still putting up big strikeout figures. He’s fanned 46 batters in just 30.2 innings so far. He’ll get an added boost of playing one of the worst run scoring teams in the league. The White Sox currently rank 24th in the league in terms of runs scored per game. Ragans should be able to get three quick outs in this one to get the NRFI started right.

The bottom of the inning doesn’t have nearly the name value on the mound, but arguably has some better statistics. Shane Smith toes the rubber and he’s been something of a revelation for the White Sox. On the year, he’s posted a 2.23 ERA and has been even better than that as of late. In his last two outings, he’s only allowed one earned run and struck out 11 in 10.0 innings. Now he’ll get to face one of the few teams that scores at a slower rate than his team. The Royals rank 27th in runs score in MLB.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 5: No (-125)

Seattle Mariners vs. Athletics

First Pitch – 10:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game is a little more nerve-racking for NRFI bettors because of the bats in the game. However, I feel like we can trust the arms enough to get us through the tough bats.

The first arm that I’m putting my faith into is Luis Severino. The Athletics’ big ticket item this off-season, Severino has lived up to their expectations. He’s posted a 3.30 ERA on the year and has held opponents to one run or fewer in three of his last four starts. We’ve also seen an uptick in his strikeout numbers – posting 11 strikeouts in the last 11.0 innings he’s pitched.

The bottom of the inning will rely on Bryce Miller. Miller has a 3.52 ERA on the year, but is coming off of his very best outing of the season. He went 5.0 scoreless against a solid hitting Los Angeles Angels squad last time out. In that game he fanned six batters. His only real problem on the year has been the amount of walks that he allows. Lucky for him, and NRFI bettors, he’s facing the Atheltics, who are 22nd in walks across MLB.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 5: No (-120)
