NBA First Scorer Props – March 17
Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks
Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
Madison Square Garden – New York, New York
Broadcast – ESPN
We head to the nationally televised game to kick off Monday’s action. In New York on Monday, we like the Heat to score first (currently listed at -125). There’s a lot of reasons to get behind them, but the biggest of all of those is their bigs are great on the tipoff. Both Kel’el Ware and Bam Adebayo have combined to nab 65.7% of the first possessions for Miami. That puts them in the top 10 in the league and a comfortable 20.2% ahead of the Knicks. With the tip winner getting 66.0% of the first buckets on the season, you have to love these odds.
If we want to get cute and pick an individual player, you won’t find much better odds than Andrew Wiggins. Despite longshot odds, he’s had a lot of the early work for this Miami team in the last week. Over the last three games, he’s taken Miami’s first shot twice. That includes the first bucket of the game in one of them and a shot that would have went for it if it fell. That’s enough bulk for me to back him here.
First Scorer Bet for March 17: Andrew Wiggins (+800)
Chicago Bulls vs. Utah Jazz
Tipoff – 9:00 pm EST
Delta Center – Salt Lake City, UT
Broadcast – NBA TV
The Bulls are back in as our favorite team to fade. For a brief moment, we had to worry about the strong tip skills of Zach Collins blowing up our spot, but with Nikola Vucevic back in the circle, they are an easy fade. Even with Collins propping up the numbers, the Bulls have won just 19.7% of the tips, which puts them dead last in the NBA. It also puts them 39.8% behind the Jazz in terms of winning the tips. As a result, we’ll grab the Jazz to score first at a very reasonable -135 here.
Another individual player that I like for Monday is Isaiah Collier. Similar to Andrew Wiggins, he’s been getting a lot of volume as of late. He took the Jazz’s first shot in two of the last three games. He also fits the bill of the type of player that the Bulls have been conceding that early bucket to as of late.
