NBA First Scorer Props – March 6
Chicago Bulls vs. Orlando Magic
Tipoff – 7:00 pm EST
Kia Center – Orlando, FL

If you’re familiar with this daily column, you know I love to fade the Bulls. They’ve long been holding the 30th spot in the rankings when it comes to both tip wins and with first bucket success rate. However, they have begun to dig themselves out a bit, which is why I’m playing them to score first at +115. With Zach Collins on the jump, they’re winning 55.6% of their jumpballs. That gives them a 12.0% advantage over the Magic. With the tip winners getting 65.8% of the first scores and the Magic being a sub-par team when it comes to scoring first anyways – it’s easy to like the Bulls for one of the first times this year.
If I’m looking to get specific with a player, I like Josh Giddey here. In each of the last three games that he’s played, he has one of the team’s first three shots. He also was regularly a first point scorer on the Thunder last year before being dealt to the Bulls. To top it all off, big guards like Giddey are the profile of what the Magic have been giving up first buckets to. As a result, I like him in this one.

new York Knicks vs. Los Angeles Lakers

It’s a similar story out West with the Lakers. While their surface stats are alright, they get a lot better when you factor in the man taking their jumps now – Jaxson Hayes. The Lakers’ big man is winning two-thirds of the tips he’s taken, which has steadily driven up the Lakers’ numbers. They are not 7th in the league in first bucket success rate and have a sizable 14.1% lead over the Knicks in terms of winning the tip. That’s not even factoring in how Hayes affects it all – which is why I like them to get on the board first at -140.
If we’re getting specific with players in this one, I’ll go with the aforementioned Hayes. He’s taken one of the team’s first three shots in two of the last three games. Also, while the Lakers do like to throw up deep balls early, both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are banged up and could potentially miss one. I’ll assume that means they’ll get busy down low early or even that Hayes gets a put back off a miss from someone off the bench.
