NBA First Scorer Props – March 5
Utah Jazz vs. Washington Wizards
Tipoff – 7:00 pm EST
Capital One Arena – Washington, DC

In the early game on Wednesday, we’re siding with the away team betting off at -105 to score first. I’m not sure why the line sits where it does when the Jazz appear to have a lot of the early advantages. Sure, they’re banged up a bit, but they have a solid lead on both the tip off win percentage (9.0%) and in the first bucket success rate (5.8%). Additionally, the Wizards are amongst the five worst teams in the league at scoring first. This seems like a great situation to get some early wins behind Utah.
If you want to get specific for players, look no further than recent breakout Kyle Filipkowski. The Duke graduate has been solid and filled in with a number of pieces missing. He’s been all over the glass, which gives him plenty of second chance hoops here. Additionally, he took two of the first three shots for the Jazz just two games ago. With that momentum and the number next to his name, this seems like a great spot for him.
First Scorer Bet for March 5: Kyle Filipkowski (+750)
Sacramento Kings vs. Denver Nuggets
Tipoff – 9:00 pm EST
Ball Arena – Denver, CO
Broadcast – NBA TV
We’ll back the home team in this one. The Nuggets are the favorites to score first, but at a mild -140. They should have all the advantages over the Kings, who are one of the worst tip teams in the league. They win just 35.0% of their tips, and with tip winners taking 65.8% of the first scores on the year, that’s already enough to fade them. However, you can add on that the Nuggets are just below league average in both the major metric and have a 5.8% advantage on the first score rate in thise one.
If we’re looking to a specifc player, Michael Porter Jr. gets far more early work than his number on Wednesday would have you believe. He took two of the first three shots just two games ago and seems to pick up the slack when Nikola Jokic is out of commission. Jokic will probably be active tonight, but is clearly banged up a bit. That could lead to more early looks for Porter Jr. and a juicy cash for us.
