NBA First Scorer Props – February 11
Detroit Pistons vs. Chicago Bulls
Tipoff – 8:00 pm EST
United Center – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – NBA TV
They’re back – everybody’s favorite team to fade on the first bucket. the Chicago Bulls are terrible on all the metrics that best indicate who is scoring first. They rank dead last in first bucket success rate at just 28.9% on the year. They also rank last in tip win percentage, which is at just 15.4%. With the tip winner getting roughly 66.4% of all first buckets, that would already be enough to tail the Pistons. However, when we add in that the Pistons are 9th in the league when it comes to scoring first, it’s a slam dunk. You can get the Pistons as a team scoring first right now at -175, which I think is a steal.
If we’re going to get a little more picky in terms of players to score first, let’s look to Ausar Thompson. The second year player is one of just two who have taken a shot in the first three attempts for the Pistons in each of the last three games. Tobias Harris is the other of the two players, but he just scored first last game. Since it’s hard for players to go back-to-back here, I like Thompson and the big number next to his name.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Phoenix Suns
Tipoff – 10:00 pm EST
Footprint Center – Phoenix, AZ

We had an easy to fade team in the Bulls to start and now we have an easy to tail one in Memphis. They are currently the best team in the league at scoring first (72.6%). They are also winning the tips at that same rate, which is good enough to have them in 3rd in the league. The Suns are above average in both of those metrics, but are still significantly behind the Grizzlies in both. They lag behind at a 18.7% clip and a 16.8% clip respectively. As a result, we’ll play the Grizzlies here, who are betting off at -150 to score first.
As we head to Memphis with a pick, there is a clear frontrunner on the docket for them. Ja Morant is getting the bulk of the early play for the squad. He has taken one of their first three shots in each of the last three games. Additionally, two of those games saw him take the first shot for Memphis. That volume can’t get overlooked in this one, so we’ll ride his hot hand.
