UFC Vegas 101: Dern vs Ribas – Predictions & Best Bets
Jose Johnson ML (-180) vs. Felipe Bunes
Perhaps my favorite line on this whole card is the moneyline on Jose Johnson. The stature of this man alone makes him so tough to deal with at flyweight. At 6’0″, it’s hard to strike with him on the outside. Also, in his last few fights, he’s really shown that he could round out his game. He has picked up a few submissions and found some wrestling chops. If Bunes tries to close the distance, I expect him to have even more trouble than he will on the outside – which also won’t be an easy night for him.
Jacobe Smith – Wins via (T)KO (+105)
Known for his wrestling abilities and that viral takedown from Dana White’s Contender Series, Smith is a prospect we were all hyped on. He not only has the ability to finish this one with ground and pound, but he has a missile for a right hand on the feet too. The odds likely are only where they are at due to him taking this on short notice. However, that hand should find the chin of grappling heavy Preston Parsons.
Trey Ogden ML (+150) vs. Thiago Moises
Trey Ogden might not be the flashiest of guys, but he has been really solid with his workman-like effort in his last three fights. He’s poisition over submission on the mat, but that allows him to stay safe and win rounds. In this one, he should be able to wrestle and just stay out of trouble on top. Although if he doesn choose to keep this on the feet, this is the type of fight he could win in that realm as well.
Magomed Gadzhiyasulov – Wins Inside the Distance (+120)
Gadzhiyasulov is a really frustrating type of fighter to try to get anything going against. He has sharp hands, but uses them to stay really long and keep fighters out of range hitting him. Not only does he fight longer, but he also has a solid reach advantage over Bruno Lopes. We’ve seen Lopes get frustrated in the past when he can’t find his range. I expect that to happen here and him to get caught when he does.
Ernesta Kareckaite ML (-258) vs. Nicolle Caliari
Caliari won her contract on Dana White’s Contender Series with a submission, keeping her perfect finish rate in tact. However, before she scored that submission, she was badly outboxed by Corinne Laframboise – a fighter known for her submission skills. If she could work Caliari on the feet, I expect it to be nasty against Kaeckaite, who is a really tough kickboxer. With that being said, I think the (T)KO prop is also in play here at +425.
Punahele Soriano – Wins via Sumbission (+1800)
If you know me from this column, you know I’d never leave you without a bomb. This week I’m banking on the increased grappling of Punahele Soriano down at welterweight. He scored five takedowns in his first fight at 170lbs, which is five times more than he did in all of his middleweight fights combined. He also used to be much more of a submission threat on the regional scene. With Medic taking both of his career losses via submission, why not dabble on a number like this?
