2024 Bowl Season Today’s Bowl Games Best Bets – Tuesday, December 31st
Reliaquest Bowl: Alabama (-16.5) vs. Michigan
The first game to look at for our Tuesday, December 31st bowl game bets is the Reliaquest Bowl. Imagine the disappointment for Alabama as they sit on the outside looking in of the CFP. Not only that, they’re “rewarded” by playing each other in the Reliaquest Bowl. Michigan will be without their top two running backs. Both teams will be missing some players, but Alabama will be whole for the most part.
Jalen Milroe will want to end the season on a high note for Alabama. This year they went 9-3 overall and 7-5 against the spread (ATS). They averaged 35 points, 240 passing yards, and 182 rushing yards per game. Their defense held teams to 17 points per game, 191 passing yards, and 139 rushing yards. Milroe decided not to opt out before the draft and wants to show teams what he’s made up to help his draft stock.
Michigan’s first year without Harbaugh wasn’t pretty. They finished 7-5 straight up and 5-7 ATS. The offense averaged 22 points per game, just 133 passing yards, and 160 rushing yards. The Wolverine defense allowed 20 points per game, 218 passing yards, but just 92 rushing yards. Limiting the opponents’ run game while having a good run game was their game plan. Can third-string running back Benjamin Hall pick up the slack? He only had 14 carries this year.
This is Alabama’s chance to show the world that the CFP Committee messed up and prove themselves. For the record, I don’t think they messed up. Alabama didn’t play well enough and with losses to Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Oklahoma, they didn’t deserve to be in the CFP.
Bowl Games Best Bets: Alabama (-16.5) cruises and the storylines continue questioning whether they should have been in the CFP
Sun Bowl: Louisville vs. Washington (-1)
The next game on our December 31st bowl game bets list is the Sun Bowl. Louisville will face Washington without their starting quarterback and without two of their top-three wide receivers. They have a lot more players sitting out than does Washington and it will show on the field. Lousiville opened as five-point favorites but now find themselves one-point dogs.
Lousiville had a decent year on the field this year. They 8-4 straight up and 6-6 ATS. Unfortunately, Tyler Shough just couldn’t get enough done before entering the NFL Draft. Their offense averaged 36 points per game, 272 passing yards, and 183 rushing yards. The defense did their job as well. They allowed an average of 23 points per game, 225 passing yards, and 135 rushing yards.
Washington didn’t have as much success. They averaged 22 points per game, 252 passing yards, and 131 rushing yards. Their defense gave up 22 points per game, 166 passing yards, and 158 rushing yards. If these teams were meeting with all starters playing from the year, Louisville -5 would be an easy pick. However, how will not having Shough and two of their top receivers affect them?
Bowl Games Best Bets: Washington (-1) – As much as I want to pick Louisville, I can’t trust they are as fluid with a quarterback who has only thrown eight passes this year.
CFP Quarterfinal Fiesta Bowl: Penn State (-12) vs. Boise State
The last game to discuss in detail on our Tuesday 31st bowl game bets list is the Fiesta Bowl, which is serving as the CFP quarterfinal. Penn State cruised to a victory in their first CFP game while Boise State had a bye and has been waiting. It will be interesting to see if Boise starts slow due to having rested for a while, or if they come out firing showing they are fresh.
It was a great year for Boise State who finished 12-1 straight up and 7-5-1 ATS. Ashton Jeanty was a beast and many are calling him the “People’s Heisman Champ”. Imagine what this Boise State team could have done back in the Kellen Moore days if there were a 12-team CFP then? This is their time for retribution. This year they averaged 39 points per game, 219 passing yards, and 250 rushing yards. Their defense allowed an average of 21 points per game, 246 passing yards, and 115 rushing yards.
Penn State also had a great year, dropping just two games to Oregon and Ohio State. They finished 12-2 straight up and 7-7 ATS. Their offense averaged 33 points per game, 238 passing yards, and 201 rushing yards. Their defense allowed an average of just 15 points per game, 179 passing yards, and 100 rushing yards. All hands will be on deck to slow Ashton Jeanty and make Boise beat them with Maddux Madsen.
Bowl Games Best Bets: Boise State +12. I don’t know if they can win the game, but I do think they can keep it close. They went toe-to-toe with Oregon early in the year and this game should have a similar feeling.
The Other Tuesday, December 31st Bowl Game Bets
Citrus Bowl: South Carolina vs. Illinois (+9): Illinois +9 is my official pick. Sprinkle a little on the Moneyline as well.
Texas Bowl: Baylor (-3.5) vs. LSU: Baylor -3.5. LSU was 4-8 ATS and has a bunch of players sitting out. They also only covered as a dog once this year.
