2024 saw Alex Palou win his second title in a row and third of his career. Colton Herta, Scott McLaughlin, Will Power, and Pato O’Ward were the final top five for the 2024 season. As mentioned, 2025 kicks off with the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg, a 1.8-mile course that runs down the streets of downtown St. Petersburg. The 17-race season will end with the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix which will be held at the Nashville Superspeedway, a 1.33-mile oval for the second straight year. The 109th Indianapolis 500 will, as always, be worth double points that could come in handy as the season winds down.

2025 INDYCAR Champion Odds and Best Bets
The Favorite: Josef Newgarden (+550)
Newgarden is the first driver who jumps off the page to me. Palou is the favorite and it’s much deserved, but 2/1 is very short odds. Scott McLaughlin has the same story. At Newgarden, you are getting a good number and a driver that’s more than capable of getting the job done. Newgarden is already a two-time champion and he of course races for The Captain in Roger Penske.
Newgarden started last year off with a bang. He won the opening race in
St. Petersburg before being disqualified. He’d go on to win his second Indianapolis 500 in a row but the rest of the season was a struggle for the veteran driver. Only two wins and a an eighth-place finish in the standings is a very disappointing season compared to his expectations.
Just the season before in 2023 despite some struggles, Newgarden won four races and was in the title hunt until a wreck at Gateway with two races to go. In 2022 he fell just 16 points short of his teammate Will Power during a five-win season. Newgarden has gotten it done and is still getting it done. Even after some struggles in 2024, he’s still fourth on the odds board for a reason. I have plenty of faith Newgarden can get it done again and he’s too good to pass up at this number.
Mid-Tier: Colton Herta (+950)
If you are looking for a second-tier driver to bet on, look no further than 24-year-old Colton Herta. The Andretti-Global driver is coming off a second-place finish in the standings in 2024.
The youngest driver to ever win an IndyCar race can be tough to bet on at times. Both the driver and team make some mistakes along the way and seem to shoot themselves in the foot. But that’s to be expected with a young driver. Herta now enters his seventh full-time season in IndyCar. Yes, seventh season at just 24-years-old.
Herta hadn’t won in two years before winning in Toronto. He then grabbed his first oval win at Nashville to end the season, a big step in IndyCar toward making himself a true title contender. He just got second, can this racing prodigy improve that by one spot and hoist the Astor Cup in 2025? At +950 he’s worth a bet.
Longshot: Christian Lundgaard (+3500)
Lundgaard is a driver I’ve had my eyes on for a little while and I’m not the only one. Arrow McLaren signed the 23-year-old driver from Denmark to take over their #7 Chevrolet, replacing Alexander Rossi. The 2022 rookie of the year and 2023 Toronto winner came up through the Alpine Academy in Formula car before jumping into IndyCar.
Lundgaard did his best for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing the past few years but this is a big upgrade for the young driver. Would a title in his first year be pretty crazy? Yes it would. But if you want a longshot to bet that may give you a chance Lundgaard is the guy. I’d be curious to see a win total for the young Danish driver this season, and I expect him to be an immediate contender. Maybe he shocks the IndyCar world and having a ticket on him at 35/1 in this equipment feels good.
