2024 Season Today’s Bowl Games Best Bets – Saturday, December 21st
First ROund Of College Football Playoff: SMU vs. Penn State (-8.5)
The first game of the day for December 20th in our bowl game best bets is SMU vs. Penn St. They’ll kick off at 12:00 PM Eastern, 9 AM Pacific as all eyes will be on SMU after their surprising season. They’ve come a long way since losing as 12.5-point favorites to BYU. In fact, after that they ripped off 9 straight wins before dropping their last game to Clemson 34-31.
SMU finished 11-2 overall with an 8-5 against the spread (ATS) record. The offense averaged 267 passing yards a game, 176 rushing yards, and 38.5 points. Their defense held opponents to an average of 20.9 points per game, 232 passing yards and 93 rushing yards. A well-balanced offense that thrives on big plays and a defense that stops the opponent from running was their success.
On the other side of the ball, Penn State finished with an 11-2 record as well and had a 6-7 ATS record. Their offense put up 246 passing yards and 202 rushing yards a game while scoring an average of 33 points per game. Penn State’s defense held teams to an average of 16 points per game, 178 passing yards, and 103 rushing yards. Their defense lacked at some points but the offense was strong enough to keep them winning games.
Both teams had losses against really good teams. They also had some solid wins, however, the argument will be made that Penn State had a tougher schedule. SMU has had a great year, though I don’t know if they can keep the magic rolling.
Today’s Bowl Games Best Bets: Penn State (-8.5) – I enjoyed watching SMU this year, but the big moment proves to be too much for them as Penn State roles.
First ROund Of College Football Playoff: Clemson vs. Texas (-11.5)
Maybe I’ll be completely wrong on my bowl game best bets for this game that takes place Saturday, December 21st at 5 PM Eastern, 1 PM Pacific. However, I have a strong feeling on this one, therefore we won’t go as in depth as the other two games today. Clemson squeaked by SMU 34-31 to get here but now have to face the powerhouse that Texas has been this year.
Texas has had multiple quarterbacks have some success this year and they’ve been awarded that opportunity by being up in so many games. They went 11-2 overall, with their only two losses to arguably the best team in the NCAA this year, Georgia. Their second game against Georgia, for the conference title, was an overtime battle ending 22-19.
Clemson had a good year, but matching a team who’s only losses were against Georgia doesn’t quite line up with the team that lost to South Carolina and Louisville. Clemson also lost to Georgia at the beginning of the year. The score of that game was 34-3. Clemson had a decent year, but Texas feels they’re one of the best teams in this league after only having lost to Georgia. They’ll be fired up and ready to cruise.
Today’s Bowl Games Best Bets: Texas (-11.5) -Clemson had a good year, but they can’t compete with Texas.
First ROund Of College Football Playoff: Tennessee vs. Ohio State (-7.5)
The last game in our bowl game best bets for Saturday, December 21st, takes place at 8:00 PM Eastern, 5:00 PM Pacific. Tennessee will face off against Ohio State to see who advances to the next round.
Tennessee finished the year 10-2 overall, with a 7-5 ATS record. They lost to Arkansas and Georgia but had some good wins like their 24-17 victory over Alabama. They averaged 37 points per game behind a powerhouse offense that put up an average of 230 passing yards a game and 232 rushing yards. Their defense allowed 178 passing yards a game and only 99 rushing yards. Limiting the opponents’ rushing game while having a strong rushing game themselves was their recipe for success.
Ohio State finished the year with a 10-2 record as well, and a 6-6 ATS record. They lost to Michigan and Oregon but beat teams like Penn State and Indiana. Their offense averaged 35 points a game with 254 passing yards and 169 rushing yards on a per-game average. Ohio State’s defense allowed an average of 10 points a game and 144 passing yards per game and 96 rushing yards. Their defense should help slow Tennessee’s rushing offense.
The most points Ohio State allowed all year was 32. The next closest was 17. They held seven opponents to 10 or less points. Tennessee allowed three opponents less than 10 points but those teams were Chattanooga, Kent State, and UTEP.
Today’s Bowl Games Best Bets: Ohio State -7.5 – Ohio State defense is too much for Tennessee and they keep rolling.
