College Basketball Picks November 26
Houston -4.5 vs. Alabama
Kelvin Sampson’s Cougar teams have always played elite defense and crashed the offensive glass, and that is exactly what this 2024 Houston squad does. They also are one of the slowest-tempo teams in the nation, which is why this matchup against Alabama will present so many issues for the Crimson Tide.
Alabama plays at the ninth-fastest tempo in the country—quite a clash of styles. The Tide also have KenPom’s third-ranked offense. They love hoisting up three-pointers under Nate Oats’ new-school offensive style. It will be very interesting to see how Houston’s second-ranked defense will look against this run-and-gun Bama squad.
Both teams have elite depth, with six players averaging 8.0+ points per game each. I think this game comes down to the clash of styles. Unless Alabama shoots Houston out of the gym, Houston’s emphasis on extra possessions and getting quality looks will be the difference.
Creighton -3.5 vs. San Diego State
Creighton suffered a bad loss to Nebraska in their last one, but I think this is more of an outlier performance than evidence of who they will be long-term. For that reason, I think this spread is way too small.
San Diego State has had tournament success over the past few seasons on the backs of their defensive prowess. In 2024, San Diego State ranks amongst the best defenses in the country, yet the offense is less than impressive. For that reason, let’s not overthink this one. Creighton is a much better team and can score the ball at will. I think they dominate in this one.
