College Basketball Picks November 25

UConn -9.5 vs. Memphis

We’re heading to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational, where the two-time national champion will face undefeated Memphis at 2:30 PM EST. Penny Hardaway’s squad loves to push the pace, and quite frankly, I think this is an awful matchup for them.

According to KenPom, Memphis ranks 43rd in the country in adjusted tempo. On the other hand, UConn ranks 260th and notoriously loves to slow the game down against high-tempo teams. They have succeeded in doing this over the last three seasons, and it has clearly worked for them, hence their back-to-back national championships.

When you play a team like UConn, you have to value each possession when they slow the game down. This means shooting at a high percentage from the field and three. I don’t think Memphis can do this. While they shoot well from downtown, they struggle shooting from two-point range—not a good sign when you’re playing the Huskies.

Auburn -4.5 vs. Iowa State

Now for the matchup of the day in Hawaii: the fourth-ranked Tigers against the fifth-ranked Cyclones.  Auburn has looked like a national title contender so far in 2024. They are 3-0-1 against the spread and are battle-tested with a huge win against Houston.

Not only is Auburn a top-five defense, but they are also a top-five offense. Auburn has the firepower to score 75+ points on any given day, and I doubt Iowa State will be able to keep up with their scoring. The Cyclones are a top-five defense as well, yet their offense is not nearly up to snuff. They’ve played three tomato cans so far and have failed to cover the spread in each game.

Iowa State will be taking a huge step up in competition. They don’t have the offensive firepower to keep up with Auburn. War Eagle, and I don’t think this is a close one.
