College Basketball Picks November 20

Merrimack at Rutgers Under 133.5 Total Points

We have talked a bit about this new-look Rutgers squad. They’ve started off the 2024 season 3-0, although they haven’t played any notable squads. That trend will continue tonight as they take on the Merrimack Warriors. Merrimack has one of the worst offenses in the country. KenPom ranks them the 328th-best offense in the country. Their defense is much better than that, though. KenPom ranks them 78th in the country.

Rutgers, on the other hand, definitely is working out the kinks on both sides of the ball. The Scarlet Knights aren’t playing to the potential of the typical Steve Pikiell defense, and with a squad full of new players, their offense hasn’t been dominant against some weak competition. I think this is a good spot to take the under with two less-than-impressive offenses and two above-average defenses.

Dayton -16.5 vs. New Mexico State

This is a matchup of two undefeated teams, yet we have a point spread of over 16 points. New Mexico State has faced some weaker teams, to say the least. New Mexico Highlands, Utah Tech, and Texas A&M-CC are not exactly blue blood programs. In these games against weaker programs, New Mexico State has been one of the worst teams in the country at forcing turnovers. They have just 24 steals on the season, yet turn the ball over at an alarming rate.

On the other hand, Dayton emphasizes ball handling and forcing turnovers. Part of Anthony Grant’s offensive style is getting up a lot of threes. Dayton has done that in their first four contests, yet they haven’t shot the ball well from behind the arc. I think this changes against a very weak Aggies defense. Dayton rolls in this one.
