NBA First Scorer Props – November 8
Brooklyn Nets vs. Boston Celtics
Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
TD Garden – Boston, MA

One of the more pronounced first bucket advantages in Friday’s action should belong to the Celtics. The Nets are still the only team in the NBA to not win a tip this year. They have gone 0-for-8 on the tipoff, which is a large part of the reason they are only 2-for-8 when it comes to the first bucket. That won’t get any easier when they face the Celtics. Despite having three different guys take the tip this year, the Celtics are still 6-for-9 on the tip and have the same rate for their first bucket. My guess is that we’ll seem Neemias Queta on the jump again – he’s 1-for-2 this year.
There’s obviously a slew of scorers for this Celtics team – all of which can be tempting on a first bucket prop. However, I’m taking a slightly down ballot play. Derrick White has been getting early looks often in the last few games. While the aforementioned Queta got an alley-oop to start their last game, it was White who took the first shot in each of the two games before that. With Jaylen Brown still down with an injury, I like White to let one fire from deep early here.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Los Angeles Lakers

These two teams have been just below average on the tip this year. However, in the Lakers’ case, some of that is due to missing Anthony Davis for a spell. When he is taking the tip, he’s been one of the better guys in the league over the last two years. Also, more important than the tip is how often they are converting. While both teams have won exactly three tips this year, the Lakers have a 50% first bucket percentage – thanks both to converting chances and getting some defensive stops. The 76ers on the other hand have just a 14.3% win rate on the first bucket. As a result, we’ll take a Laker in Friday’s action.
My play out west for today is the obvious one. I know Davis missed last game with plantar fasciitis, but he’s probable to play in this one. In his last two games played, he’s littered the play log with early attempts and rebounds. With Joel Embiid still out of the equation in the middle, I think he should have even more chances here. Additionally, if he is for some reason a late scratch from the game, most books will void the bet (be sure to look at their first bucket rules). Then you won’t have to worry about a back-up like Jaxson Hayes losing the tip and giving the 76ers a rare first bucket.
