Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – World Series Game 1
Gerrit Cole – Higher than 4.5 Hits Allowed
I do like the results that Gerrit Cole has had lately. However, you cannot overlook that he has been more hittable in the postseason. After allowing hits at a 7.39 per nine inning rate in the regular season, he’s done so at a 10.47 per nine inning rate in October. He’s also gone higher than this projection in all three of the games that he’s pitched. And it hasn’t been close – passing it by at least 1.5 hits each time.
Kike Hernandez – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases
October Kike is here and he’s not going away. After hitting .229 in the regular season, Hernandez is up to hitting .303 in the postseason and is showing no signs of slowing down. He’s been over this projection in five of the nine games this October. Plus, he’s getting a familiar face from his AL East days in Gerrit Cole on the bump. The two have faced 24 times with Hernandez going 8-for-21 (.381) with half of those hits going for extra bases. As a result it’s one of my favorite Underdog plays for the World Series.
Shohei Ohtani – Lower than 0.5 Stolen Bases
Shohei was an absolute beast stealing bases during the regular season. He nabbed 59 total steals and was only caught four times. However, it’s become pretty clear that the reason for that was strictly building the stats. Since the calendar has flipped to October and the games have meant more, he’s only attempted to steal a single base. He was caught in that lone attempt, leaving him without a stolen base in the postseason.
