MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 18

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 5:08 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – FOX

The Dodgers’ bats could not be hotter at the moment, so it seems like an easy YRFI when David Peterson takes to the hill. He threw in the Mets’ blow-out, game one loss – coming in during the third inning. In that game he would wind up throwing 2.1 innings and gave up a pair of runs. The Dodgers pretty much immediately got to work on him in the first full inning he threw. Three of the first four batters recorded hits in that inning, with the only one failing to reach base being a sacrifice. With the roll the Dodgers are on and how well they saw Peterson just four days ago, I have to go with the potential for early scoring.

While Jack Flaherty was sensational in his first appearance in this series, his recent results also aid our YRFI pick here as well. Going into his game one start against the Mets, he had allowed at least three runs in four straight starts. His ERA in those four appearances came out to 6.52. Perhaps you might find some confidence in him given the last start, but between the previous ones and Peterson’s last look, the YRFI is looking too good here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 18: Yes (+100)

New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 8:08 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, Ohio
Broadcast – TBS

The offense has been flowing in this series and I don’t expect it to stop here either. With a pair of guys on the bump who haven’t started, or pitched for that matter, all postseason, it’s hard to imagine they can keep things in check.

I feel that’s especially true about Luis Gil. In his last 11 regular season innings, Gil allowed 10 earned runs. Those games came nearly three weeks ago against the Pirates and the Athletics – not exactly two beacons of offense. With the lengthy layoff, I worry about how sharp he’ll look to begin with. If you add in the fact that his strikeout numbers dwindled down the stretch, you have to like the high-contact of the Guardians to get some runs across.

Even if Gil manages to get out of the first unscathed, I don’t expect Gavin Williams to also be able to follow suit. In his last four starts of the regular season, he allowed first inning runs in half of them. Not only that, but he surrendered six total first inning runs in those games. Add in the fact that Aaron Judge went yard against him this past August, and one swing might be the ticket for this YRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 18: Yes (-110)
