Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick’em Plays – October 14
October is here. The playoffs are here. The best sports time of the year is here. If you aren’t familiar with playoff baseball, buckle up. Every pitch and every at-bat is important and can change the course of baseball history. We have two great Championship Series matchups tonight! Let’s get into it.
Alex Verdugo Higher Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
There are no two ways about it. Offensively, Alex Verdugo did not have the season Yankee fans had envisioned when they traded for him in the offseason. His 83 OPS+ was by far the worst of his career. This is not ideal for a player in a contract year, but his defense in left field has been elite for New York.
The Yankees and Guardians are set to start their best-of-seven-game series on Monday. Alex Cobb gets the start for Cleveland in Game 1. The veteran Cobb was acquired by Cleveland at the trade deadline yet made just three starts for the team, pitching rather well in those starts.
Verdugo has elite numbers against Cobb in his career, although it is a small sample size. In 8 plate appearances, Verdugo is 3-7 with two doubles, an xBA of .522, an xSLG of 1.042, and an average exit velocity of 94.7 MPH. Verdugo clearly sees the ball well off of Cobb, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he puts one over the short right field wall.
Juan Soto Higher Than 7.5 Fantasy Points
Juan Soto is another Yankee who has really good numbers against Alex Cobb. The Yankees’ slugger is 7-11 with two homers with a .412 xBA, and an .854 xSLG. Soto and Stanton have been the Yankees’ only consistent hitters thus far in the playoffs. Also, with Soto batting second, he will have plenty of chances to do some damage against Cobb.
I don’t think Cobb will pitch deep into this game, but while he’s in there, I expect both Soto and Verdugo to do damage.
Mookie Betts Higher Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Off to the other series, the Dodgers have a 1-0 series lead against the Mets after their commanding 9-0 win last night. After a lot was made of Mookies postseason struggles, he’s come up huge in the last few games. In his last four, Mookie has five hits and six RBIs.
Betts has succeeded throughout his career against Mets Game 2 starter Sean Manaea. He is 10-32 with two doubles, two triples, and three homers. Manaea has been great thus far in the playoffs, but I think Mookie will get the best of him in this spot.
